Over 7.6 lakh Indians went abroad for higher studies in 2024, data from the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) has revealed. In 2020, over 2.6 lakh Indian students went abroad. This number rose to 4.45 lakh in 2021, followed by a sharp increase to 7.52 lakh in 2022. The upward trend peaked in 2023 when nearly 8.95 lakh students pursued studies overseas.

The data from the Bureau of Immigration shows that despite the dip in 2024, the overall number of students remains much higher than previous year. The decline is attributed to various factors, including stricter visa policies and rising costs in traditional destinations like the US, UK, and Canada. This has led to a shift in preferences towards other countries.
